Awarding 1 or 2 KudoZ points to selected answerers Initiator des Themas: mimi 254

Hello everyone,
I wonder what other prozians think about this: someone asks a question, one or several answers are provided and he/she chooses the "most suitable" answer, enters it in the kudoz glossary, but awards 1 point to the answerer. Isn't that illogical?

But selecting an answer, entering it in the glossary - future reference - and awarding 1 point, i think it is really not fair.

mimi254,
By awarding points, you chose the most helpful answer, not the most suitable one (by definition).

I agree with your point. Awarding less than four points really only makes sense if an answer, while not entirely satisfactory, helped the Asker determine a satisfactory answer to one degree or another.
What I find irritating is when a question is closed with *no one* being awarded points, even when at least one plausible answer has been provided. | | | Thomas Pfann Vereinigtes Königreich Local time: 05:18 Mitglied (2006) Englisch > Deutsch + ... It's actually good to be reminded of this guideline on how to award points, which as far as I can see is hardly ever being followed - at least not in the language pairs I follow. (Just like efreitag I, too, usually see 4 points being awarded by default).
Criteria for the number of points:
4: Answer was acceptable, explanation was good, reference was provided (or not needed)
3: Answer was acceptable, explanation was good, but reference was lacking
2: Answer was acceptable
1: Answer was somewhat helpful
So if a peer provides a correct translation, but neiter an explanation nor a reference to support the translation it is only fair to award no more than 2 points. I assume, the reasoning behind it being that the asker will still need to do some research in order to validate the answer - which may not be necessary (or will at least be a lot quicker) if you get the answer complete with explanation and references (on a silver platter as it were).

In my view, the criteria that are in place need to be modified. Even if references are provided by the answerer, the asker still needs to validate that the references are both legitimate and relevant to the context of the question, and this will take time. Furthermore, the reality of the matter is that many of those participating in Kudoz are busy with their own work, and don't have time to track down references.

In my view, points should be awarded solely on the basis of helpfulness to the answerer. Thus, the suggestion that is used by the asker in his/her work deserves four points, irrespective of whether it is accompanied by references.
After all, the Kudoz system is designed as a means of help, and is not intended to be a free comprehensive research service.

Thanks for your various contributions. I just felt it is awkward to award 1 point, meaning the answer was somewhat useful (pointing you to the right directtion), and to enter it in the glossary as it is for future use.
I think the answer should be acceptable to be entered in the glossary - if it is only somewhat helpful, award 1 point and amend/improve the answer (with your new findings) before entering it in the glossary. It would be more beneficial in that way IMHO. | | | Totally agree with Robert ... | Jan 24, 2011 |

This deserves some emphasis.
I find people that award 1 or 2 points for a helpful answer as being unnecessarily petty. Thanks, Mimi, for raising this point. | | | Closing the question without awarding points AFTER writting "Thanks, that's exactly what I needed!" | Feb 14, 2011 |
Hi, RObert!
I agree it's irritating, but much more annoying when your answer got a "Thanks, that's exactly what I needed!" comment from the asker and then he/she closes it WITHOUT AWARDING points and gives the "ANSWER FOUND SOMEWHERE ELSE" reason...
It happened 2 times to me...

Sometimes, you give a lot of explanations, details, etc. and the asker chooses the answer of someone else that is just irrelevant. You deserved more than 4, if it would have been possible.
Sometimes, you have to fight against three ignoramus, google runners, who propose things they don't understand a word of, sighing for a sign of recognition like new kinds of pets. What is the value of their dangerous contribution?

Once, I got a fairly good assessment for my answer. The asker contacted me in private for reviewing his translation against payment, without having given me any score on Proz for my answer!

To give 1 or 2 points seems ridiculous to me. As I am spiteful and vindictive, I write it down in an excel sheet, and at at the first opportunity I pay them in kind...

I have sometimes given 2 points or so when the best solution has come from a process of discussion among several participants (including sometimes in the Discussion section, not the Answers section). Then somebody comes along and takes what others have contributed and proposes a solution which to me is "the best," but is not necessarily based on their own efforts. There are some subtleties here, maybe not worth bothering with. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Awarding 1 or 2 KudoZ points to selected answerers TM-Town | Manage your TMs and Terms ... and boost your translation business
