Dear colleagues:
I think in English -spanish translation it is necessary to identify the type of target Spanish (European, latinamerican (which country?).It would save time and avoid misunderstandings. I have felt insulted by some comment from someone who assumes I know which part of the world they are by telepathy; unless people state things, one cannot guess. I have heard this suggestion before and would appreciate this change being introduced. I'd appreciate comments.

it would be helpful in situations like this to at least have an optional field in the question form. For the reasons that Elena gives.

I can't but agree with previous contributors to this thread. IMHO the principle of specifying the target language variety should be made mandatory not only in the KudoZ system (in the form of an extra required field to be programmed into the KudoZ asking form) but also with regard to job postings. Quite clearly, this would also apply to the varieties of German (nb. Swiss and Austrian), French and other languages (there surely must be regional variances in Arabic, too, for ex... Prior to implementing such changes, we'd have to take stock of all significant languages falling under the "more than one variety" category.

I feel it is a good suggestion but at the same time may not be 100% right.
I translate/interpret into European Spanish but I have done jobs where the variety needed was Latin American Spanish and there haven't any problems at all. I feel if they are in a hurry they will allocate if to whoever and besides as far as formal translation is concerned I do not believe that there are that many differences.

I completely agree with the idea of stating the variety of the language needed.
Ideally, us translators, when posting a question, should make this clear. But to avoid "forgetting", an optional box to fill with the variety or the country for which the translation is needed, would be of great use. This would cover those that need more general translations (no obligation to state variety) and those that require something more specific.
