Lies in profiles Aug 22, 2005

Which raises another good point: it is way too easy to lie in your profile/resume. Some pretty basic Kudoz posts by a certain person recently led me to check out his/her resume on Proz where that person claimed to have obtained a masters from a study abroad program (I know the program well as a good friend of mine teaches for it and am quite sure it is not a masters program nor does it confer any sort of degree, diploma, certificate, etc). Needless to say, I decided to check out some of the other "facts" on the resume which proved to be false.

I also noticed the same thing in a profile of somebody who comes from the same country I come from. His/her translation degree had been allegedly obtained in an institute that I know very well is not a university and does not confer any post-secondary degree (it's just a language institute to learn English). I am not saying that a person who didn't get his/her degree is not qualified to translate. Some of them are, and some of them have other kinds of degrees and a good eye for the written word, or a lot of experience, and can also be good. But a client should have the choice to choose who he/she considers to be most qualified. Unfortunately, many people can be misled by these false statements and I find it quite disrespectful for those who did go to university and studied hard to become translators.

Reducing abuse by verifying identities Aug 22, 2005

Total anonimity and the ability to register many times foster abuse.

I suggest that many types of abuse would be greatly reduced if questions can only be asked by registered members (non-platinum and platinum) whose identity has been verified by Proz.com (even if they chose to use a nickname).

Obviously, this would require an easy and inexpensive method of identity verification.
