Hi,
I'm not really new to translating but have decided to translate full time.
I am not currently using any translation software, just the use of some online sites and my Japanese husband. But now I am interested in purchasing Trados but I have a very limited budget.
Any assistance would be sincerely appreciated. How does the group purchasing work?
Thank you.
Best.

If I may advise something... May 13, 2009

I would recommend to start with Metatexis. It does basically everything that Trados does, however is much cheaper. Also there is a Lite version which you can use for free just to start with and to get used to the software.

Even if you will decide to buy Trados afterwards, getting started with Metatexis, which is very user-friendly, would be a very helpful experience; it would be much easier for you to work with other CAT tools in the future.

Try MemoQ for free May 13, 2009

You can download and use MemoQ for free. I'm trying it out now, and basically I like it. I normally use Trados, but I'm considering changing to MemoQ at some stage.

Usable, free CAT tools are hard to beat...

Trial versions of CAT tools May 13, 2009

I encourage you to try out several before buying. MetaTexis, Wordfast, and MemoQ all have free trial versions, although various restrictions apply. Also, there are at least two free CAT tools: OmegaT and Across Personal Edition. OmegaT only works with Microsoft Office 2007 XML or OpenOffice.org. Most only run on Windows platforms.

I've tried all of these except MemoQ.

I just recently started using Across and find it to be full of features. It is a huge program and it's not as intuitive as some of the others. I have to say that the learning curve is rather steep, but IMHO it seems to be worth the effort. If you decide to try it, be aware that there are two versions: one (Across Language Server) is intended for use by outsourcers and must be purchased. The company makes Across Personal Edition available for download or on DVD to freelancers at no cost -- obviously to encourage its use in hopes that outsourcers will buy Across Language Server. I can't say how well that strategy is working or how long it will last.

And of course, there's always Trados. It's the most widely used CAT tool and some outsourcers insist on it, but it's also very expensive. Most of the other tools are compatible with it to varying degrees.

What if an agency/client specifies that Trados is required in a job posting? May 13, 2009

If you do not have Trados, but use some of the other tools discussed here, how do you handle the "Trados required" tag that one often sees in job posts? Do you mention in your bid that you are proficient on compatible tools?

Thanks!

I don't know about MemoQ and some other tools May 13, 2009

but Metatexis is a Trados-compatible tool, which means that, if your client requires delivering uncleaned files in Trados format, you can do this; you can also work with Trados files sent to you, as well as use and send back translation memories (in TMX or TXT formats).

Many CAT tools are Trados-compatible (MemoQ or StarTransit just to name a few). The only "thing" you need is a project manager who is technically competent enough to allow you to edit Trados projects with a different tool. Needless to stress that there are not many PMs competent enough...

Just about any CAT tool May 14, 2009

The 30 days evaluation version of DVX was not mentioned yet. You can get it at www.atril.com.

BTW, Natalie: Does Metatexis "eat" ttx files?

Yes, that is a very, very good deal. Not much more than what the next Trados upgrade will cost, and you'll be getting a superb product with first-rate support. The compatibility with Trados by a number of methods is very good.

I am a long-term user of both Trados and Déjà Vu. There are still a few types of projects that I can do with those tools that I cannot handle with the current version of MemoQ, but on the other hand, I can handle many things well with MemoQ that are a PITA or are simply impossible with other tools. I am usually more productive now with MemoQ than with the alternatives, and more efficient work means more money earned or more free time. Take your pick.

Kevin's endorsements of MemoQ should be recognized as a major asset of Kilgray if they aren't already!

So effective that I have joined the group buy - even though I'm a convinced Trados user. It never hurts to broaden your horizons, does it? And for this price, it's really a bargain...

Are you new users happy with MemoQ? Jun 15, 2009

After reading Kevin's impressive description of this software I am considering it as a possible first investment too. I saw that 60 people signed up to buy it recently and I was wondering whether they are satisfied, and how they went about learning how to use it (for those with no previous experience of CAT). Did you follow online training?
Any advice/feedback would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Sharon

PS Are any more group buys planned?
