Saving a rotated PDF in Acrobat?

Hi all,

I received a pdf (50 pages) which has all text vertical, i e spreadsheets prepared for print. No other source file was available from the client.

My intention is now to OCR this, but my OCR program refuses to interpret vertical text.

I got the idea to rotate the PDF in Acrobat, and save it with the horizontal pages. But next time I open the PDF, all pages are vertical again, so it seems that the rotation is only done on-screen, and not saved in the ... See more

I also tried to print the file to the virtual Acrobat PDF printer, but the output is still vertical.

I'm running Acrobat Professional 7.0, and I'm surprised that this function is not available.

Do you guys know of any other solution, short of printing the document on paper and scan it again??? It would cause additional headache, since there are coloured text layouted on top of photos and graphics.

OCR software should be capable of rotating the pages May 24, 2006

Abby Reader does it for sure and/or you could use Microsoft's "Office Document Image writer" (part of 2003 afaik) to do all this: rotate, OCR and pass it on to word for instance.

Have you tried to select all and copy it in Acrobat? - maybe you can even get it all via clipboard.

Thanks for your quick reply Vito,

I know there is other better OCR software out there. It's just an old habit to use my current program, since it's stable and give good results (from horizontal at least)

And copy-paste (or saving as RTF directly from Acrobay) usually give half-decent results and can be used as a last resort.

In this case, I might have sorted out the problem myself. I realized that if I print it as a PDF on the virtual Adobe PDF printer, I must uncheck the "Auto-rotate" button, and the PDF will come out rotated!


But I'd like to find out more about MODIW.
After I've printed the file from Acrobat, what do I do with the .MDI file? Maybe there are previous threads on the forum?!

Hi Jan.

I'm also running Acrobat 7 Professional (7.0.7), and tried to rotate all pages of 2 files (a 1 page file, and a 200 pages file), and it worked in both cases.
I used the Document > Rotate Pages command, chose "90° clockwise" and "All pages". I then used File > Save As and renamed the rotated files. I closed them, and then reopened them, and all pages were still rotated.

Are you using this same method?

Acrobat Pro has two rotates! May 26, 2006

This is missed by a lot of people. The rotate that's represented by the little rotated page on the main tool bar is only for show; it does not modify the file. The one under Document > Rotate Pages actually does the rotation.

This lead me on the right track. But it's pretty annoying that this is not indicated in any way on the toolbar... Not very intuitive of Acrobat, IMHO.
