German term

Zopf

German to English Tech/Engineering Forestry / Wood / Timber
I am translating a text about a word-sorting machine and have come across the term 'Zopf' in the term 'Zopfbestimmung'. It seems to refer to the wood at the top of a tree but I am trying to find a more technical way to express it. Would it be correct to refer to it as the 'crown' of the tree?

Interesting what a word-sorting machine can do! :-)

(dominant) leader

Dominant leader: The trunk that grows up through the
center of the tree and obviously dominates the rest of
the branches. A dominant leader originates from a
single dominant trunk and is the topmost part of a tree.

top log

My Dictionary of Wood Science and Technology (Mühle) offers "top log" and "crown" for Zopf.

The presence of compression wood was much more common in the top log timber (75%) than in the butt log (44%).

Integrating a process-based growth model for Scots pine into economic optimization, Hyytiäinen et al. (2004) reported economic optimization results for timber production using timber grade prices (top log, middle log, butt log, and pulpwood). Their bucking system has also been applied to optimizing stand establishment based on the same process model (Hyytiäinent et al. 2006).

Definitely not crown, as this includes the branches and leaves.
