Change of surname certificate
I think I may be being a bit dopey about this but please can someone explain the sense of the above. It appears in a certificate on a change of surname, in which the husband for some reason is taking on the wife's surname. I found it translated on Leo as " The previous use of name has not been checked under circumstances" which makes no sense to my mind. Thank you for any help

verification of identity based on the previous name may not have been performed
"Űberprűft" means- here- identity verification, which is usually performed by comparing a person’s name shown on one document with the name stated on another official document (often a photo ID) , driver’s licence or birth certificate.
In this particular case, such verification process may or may not have been performed, meaning the person applying for a new name may not have been asked to produce an official document showing his previous name.
„Zur Feststellung Ihrer Identität bringen Sie bitte Ihren alten (ggf. abgelaufenen) Personalausweis oder Reisepasss mit. Zur Überprüfung der Namensführung ist, sofern dies nicht bei Ihrer Anmeldung bereits geschehen ist, eine aktuelle Personenstandsurkunde vorzulegen.“

: I agree with your rendition, mine was too literal and meant to be a first step towards a better English phrasing like yours.

: Strongly disagree with "gangels" - this is just the right register for this type of legal document.

: The previous name may have conceivably not been checked out (corroborated/verified). 'Unter Umständen' here is no more than 'possibly/conceivably'
