Can anyone help me out with this one?
This phrase appears in a scientific article about surface modification of plastics materials using plasma treatment. The sentence is as follows:
"Die Oberfläche kann durch die Vorbehandlung derart geformt werden, dass es zu einer mechanischen Verklammerung zwischen Kunststoff und Klebstoff kommen kann."
I know "Verklammerung" can mean grouting and clamping, but these don't seem to fit here. Would "mechanical fusion" or "mechanical bond" be an accurate translation? Any other suggestions gratefully received!

mechanical bonding
An adhesive that has a relatively low viscosity and is able to wet the substrate surface will flow into any tiny cracks or pores on the substrate surface, thus promoting what is known as mechanical bonding. Mechanical bonding increases the strength of an adhesive bond and, as a result, a forced separation of the two substrate surfaces is more apt to tear the substrate surfaces.

Thanks Jakub. I'm sure this is equally correct but in this instance I'm going to go for 'interlocking' as the word 'bonding' is used so many times elsewhere in the text and 'Verklammerung' only appears this once. |
