This is a nasty sentence from an otherwise straightforward employment reference, but I can't work out what "vom Index eins beschrieben" means here.
Any explanations and/or suggestions very much appreciated.

I'm not a maths expert, but as you said any suggestions would be appreciated and it's already been 35 mins without an answer:
"Processes are described using differential algebraic equations of index 1" would be my shot at it.

His XYZ optimization software permits the efficient and robust handling of large multi-stage optimal-control problems [I assume the singular was a typo] for processes described by index-one DAEs.
"DAEs of index one" is also possible. "described by" is better than "described using", because that's the way mathematicians talk and it's about the nature of the process, not how someone chooses to describe it.
