it is a well system arpound the perimeter of e.g. a landfill to entrap/retain the contaminated seepage water from that landfill. In Frankfurt/Main Germany, in the Stadtwald, they did it around the 'Monte Scherbelino' a landfill of WWII debris, in form of a perimeter trench entrapping the seepage to lead it into a canal to a sewage treatment plant
