steinig ist der Weg zu den Sternen

„Per aspera ad astra“ … steinig ist der Weg zu den Sternen.

I will leave the Latin but must translate the German!

Any help much appreciated.

Francis Lee (X) May 9, 2006:
Any context, Stephen? After all, there's a big difference between plans for universal, global and playground domination/success (NASA/Sony, Microsoft/Sony and the Bognor Regis under-12s tiddly-winks championships)

It's a stoney road to the stars

Albeit with the disclaimer that more context would help!

A stoney road (indeed) to the stars it be.

agree Brie Vernier : "stony" for AE ... which Stephen probably doesn't need anyway ... are there actually such things as tiddly-winks tournaments?? : )

Brie - you'd be amazed ...
neutral Armorel Young : am I the only person who finds this is rather bizarre mixed metaphor, given that the way to the stars is through space and would therefore have great difficulty being stoney?

it's a common enough phrase, Amorel, and unless Stepehen is writing from a bunker underneath Houston, it'd be safe to assume it's meant in the figurative sense ;-)
agree Lancashireman : '...fraught with asteroids'

the thorny way to success

I know it doesn't stay with the term "steinig", but it conveys the meaning that success doesn't come easily. Stars symbolize success in the widest sense... I thought, I'd try this

the way to the stars is fraught with/full of obstacles

I agree wholeheartedly with Armorel - using obstacles removes the stony/thorny problem which is not present in the Latin
