Die Mundhöhle (Cavum oris) wird ventral von den Lippen und der Mundspalte, lateral von den Wangen, cranial vom Gaumen, caudal vom Mundboden sowie dorsal von der Schiundenge begrenzt (Pernkopf 1958). Beim Kiefer-schluß erfolgt durch die Zähne eine Unterteilung in das Vestibulum oris, in welches der Parotisgang einmündet, und das Cavum oris proprium.
