Dear all,

my preferred translation for the above is "Institute FOR Nutrient Research". The customer would like to know whether we could use "Institute OF etc.". I don't mind changing "for" to "of" provided it is correct. Unfortunately, I can't seem to work it out...

My question is: Would it make a difference? If so, how?

I would greatly appreciate if a native could find the time to reply (and explain). Thanks very much in advance!

An institute that researches nutrients, would be conducting a specialized kind of chemical research; one of nutrition research would research actual foodstuffs, and possibly, not necessarily, nutrition as a bio-medical aspect of life. Now add sports nutrition to all that. And think of all the possible degrees and diplomas!

Question (re: nutrient/nutrition) Is the full title of your Institute in fact "Institut für Nährstoff-Forschung und Sporternährung"? (This is the Austrian institute that comes up when Googling your term).

I have predominantly heard and seen "Institute OF ..."

In addition, I would opt for "nutrition" instead of "nutrient"

Nährstoff -> 1. nutrient, nutriment, nutrition, nutritive substance .
2. Nährstoffe -> foodstuff, food

There are not many hits for "Institute for Nutrient Research" but plenty for "Institute of Nutrition Research"

agree Nicola Wood : I don't think there is any problem changing the for to of -it is largely just a question of normal usage in the relevant languages. And I definitely agree with the suggestion of nutrition rather than nutrient.

agree Susanne Higer : Thank you all for your help! The client uses nutrient in his publications. Personally I always thought nutrition 'contained' nutrients, e.g., vitamins. I never thought of vitamins as nutrition. Am I mistaken? Thanks again!

Thank you, Susanne. If nutrition contains nutrients, e.g. vitamins, then vitamins are part of nutrition. Please see also my comment to Harald Moelzer below.
neutral Harald Moelzer (medical-translator) : 'of' will work the same as 'for' - however, 'nutrition' (Ernährung) is covering much more than just 'nutrients' (Nährstoffe), and does not work here

Just for the reason you state, these institutes are usually called "Institute of Nutrition Research" which may concentrate on research in nutrients. To run a whole institute doing research on "nutrients" alone would be financially rather uneconomical.

Another puzzle: "Nährstoff" often just means "food". You would need more context.

agree Harald Moelzer (medical-translator) : 'for' is absolutely fine, and 'of' will also do the job. Definitely "nutrient research"
