Umkodierer

Deutsch > Englisch Sonstige
Das sich unter diesen Bedingungen entwickelnde Berufsbild hat denkbar wenig gemein mit dem Umkodierer, jenem Bild des Übersetzers, das immer wieder im Alltag kursiert.

From a text on developments in the field of translation. The "Bedingungen" here are the opportunities offered by information and communication technologies. My first thought is "transliterator", but I'm not sure if there might be a more elegant solution.

"Decoder"

Hi Angie,

speaking about information and communication technologies, perhaps, a technical term might be not too bad (putting "decoder" in inverted commas).

I would use a technical term anyway to fit the context.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks everyone, I like the technical term idea in this context. Agree also with Deborah, but the text goes on to talk specifically about "bessere Sekretärinnen" so I needed "glorified secretaries" there!"

Google hits with Umkodierer are mainly linked to the 'transliteration of cryllic' texts.

as a glorified secretary

or a modern-day 'scribe'
(cliché of the translator as...)

The challenge would seem to be to find a word in everyday parlance which expresses the common public misapprehensions about how translators work.

Interesting article by Tim Martin of the EC Translation Service also refers to the "get it typed up" school of thought, and the idea of "a latter-day scribe or amanuensis".
