Pardon?/I beg your pardon?/Excuse me?

US)"I beg your pardon?".

Pardon?

Also suffices in many cases along with "I beg your pardon", which sounds a bit stilted.

bigyers

In 'Strine, it's "bigyers?", roughly translatable into conventional English as "I beg your pardon?" or "Pardon?".

Seriously, the full sentence "I beg your pardon." is most often used, as often with "wie bitte?", to mean "I understood you very well but you just said something I can't believe or didn't want to hear."

The short form "Pardon?" usually means, as "wie bitte?" also sometimes means, "Could you repeat that please, I didn't quite understand."

For the real question about what someone said, I have also heard "Could you repeat that please?" or "Sorry, what did you say?" very often, especially in the US.
