The role French (the successor to Latin) played in the past as the lingua franca of Europe has been replaced by English. So, in the future, who knows? I have no crystal ball and I’m no good at predictions… | | | Aitor Salaberria Spanien Local time: 22:09 Mitglied (2023) Englisch > Baskisch + ... As Maria Teresa says, who knows what language will be the "lingua franca" in the future, but that has nothing to do with the business. There are both successful translators and interpreters who are not working in English.
This kind of questions about succeeding in the industry in near future... it shouldn't be about what is the most appropriate language for being a successful translator or interpreter, it's not about that.

English as a source accounts for over 75% of my income, and this is corroborated by other EN/ES>FR translators.
In other words, my business wouldn't be sustainable without English–and that is true for other language combinations.
However, I have also exchanged with a handful of French translators who only have German as their SL. There can be other niches with specific languages (for instance, I know a translator who works from French into a "regional" French language).
