Since a while a notice has been popping up on my PC wanting me that the AVG free edition would expire from December 1st. All it's functions seems to continue working, but I've also read on the Internet that the free AVG version 8.5 would not be available for download anymore. Have you heard anything about it? If I've been using it before this expiration date, will I be able to continue using it? Will it still maintain the same security level?

I understand that the problem regards mainly new users who cannot download free version but as everyone needs to reinstall OS from time to time we'll all have this problem.
I think that in this situation I would choose Microsoft Security Essentials - it has decent reviews for a free software (http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ )

* High detection rates for viruses and spyware;
* Scanning Scheduler;
* Automatic downloads of regularly updated Virus Database.
* Standalone virus scanner and right-click menu integration to Microsoft Windows Explorer;
* Addin to Microsoft Outlook to remove virus-infected attachments automatically.
Please note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.

AVG is still free - you downloaded the trial version of the paid variety | Dec 4, 2009 |
Hi Karina,
Downloading the free version of AVG is a little tricky, as you are directed to the trial version first and you have to really know what you're doing.
Same story with AVG 8 and 8.5.

Sandra

Hi Staphen,
Could you provide me with the right URL? I could not find it, and don't want to download the wrong one once more.
Thanks and regards,

I downloaded the trial version and was advised that I would be given the option to revert to the free version at the end of of the trial period.

It is quite normal for old versions of a freeware product to become unavailable when later versions become available.
I myself am happy that I have the 8.5 installer, because 9.0 gave me blue screens of death (several per hour) on my Windows XP machine. I then removed 9.0 and reinstalled 8.5, and it downloaded the latest files and it works fine again.
I wonder if it would be possible for someone to install 8.5 now, after 1 December, and still get the updates? I suppose the program would give an error message if itis not possible. | | | Laurent KRAULAND (X) Frankreich Local time: 22:54 Französisch > Deutsch + ...

Hi Russell,
the differences between the versions are shown on the page for which Hynek gave a link. Assessing the plus points of paying versions is indeed another question...

AVG definitely still free, but definitely not the best option, usually slowing your machine down and often producing hoaxes. If you want to stick to free Czech antivirus, I suggest that you try Avast.
As regards commercial products, I'd prefer NOD32 or F-Secure. | |

Since I hadn't installed anything else, I was just getting ready to send Grisoft an email, when all of a sudden, after about two weeks, everything was back to normal and working "comme il faut."
Have no idea what happened, but the program apparently healed itself. Would love to get an explanation from Grisoft. ▲ Collapse | | | Textklick Local time: 21:54 Deutsch > Englisch + ... In stillem Gedenken
I upgraded to the paid version of 9.0.710 some time back. It scans much quicker, seems to find more crap and deals with it.

AVG has always been highly spoken of in the forums. Do I want security or freebies?
I'll take the former please.

This summer I got some Trojans from USB flash memories which neither McAfee nor Kaspersky could heal, so I bought a special Anti-Trojan called Prevx, which did help.
