I answer Kudoz questions because it a good online translation exerciser.
I do it in all my language pairs because it keeps me fit for any real translations. Normally, I do not get carried away by the answers of other colleagues. It also tells me how not to translate. Of course, sometimes I see brilliant answers.
At the same time, I seek help from Kudoz members, when I am stuck up with a tricky situation.
Why do you spend your time answering Kudoz questions?

When I was a child, my farther taught me how to read and write by doing crosswords together. Later, I learned how to use dictionaries and encyclopedies to find out all the solutions I was looking for. And so I became a crossword addicted.
KudoZ is a nice way of dealing with my "addiction" and helping another ProZ user to find a term they're looking for.

Time permitting, I answer when I think I have the solution or a solution that hasn't been mentioned yet.
The motivation for me is that I hope to lower the threshold for someone else to make a suggestion when I have a question later on. (The "points" business is irrelevant to me, as I'm a staff translator and currently don't have to prove my expertise.)

I'm the type of person who would prefer to have a lot of suggestions, even if some are off the wall, than one supposedly (or really) right answer.
Of course, the "right" answer is desirable, but I like the brainstorming approach - partly because it is good for future reference. (Today's "right" answer might not work for tomorrow's version of the same question, but another "wacky" one would.)
Very little translation is one-to-one, so having a range of responses is important to me.
Generally, however, I'm one of the slower answerers and usually only comment on the answers that were provided instantaneously. My main pair (German to English) is very well populated and leads quickly to good answers, with the exception of askers who have been recognized as asking too much and answering too little - an area where I and others refrain from answering - though perhaps to our future detriment.

My father also taught me to do crosswords, and both my father and my mother taught me to search for a term in the dictionary whenever I asked them "What does this mean?"
We had at least 3 different collections of dictionaries and encyclopedias at home, and my parents encouraged my sisters and me to use them.
This developed into a lifelong love affair with words
As to why I answer KudoZ questions... well, it's a give and take situation, because even if my answer is completely wrong sometimes, I still get the chance to read the answers given by others and learn! It's like taking a test at school, only you get to read your neighbors' answers too! Isn't that great?

I ask Kudoz questions and many of my Proz colleagues have helped me with their answers. I think it would be very selfish of me not to answer questions when I believe I have a good suggestion to offer.
