Hello all,
Recently I've been experiencing a certain degree of annoyance at questions classified as Non-PRO when they are clearly PRO.
Most of these questions come from the same Askers, over and over.

Most of the time those of us who answer don't realize this erroneous classification.
It is to our benefit to change the Non-PRO questions to PRO whenever it's appropriate. The number one reason is that since our answers are also classified, the Non-PRO answers don't show up in our profiles. The points are still there, but that doesn't help much.
Trying to get the Asker to change the questions to PRO is almost impossible, sometimes I really wonder if it's an oversight or something else.
Anyhow, those are my 2 cents regarding this issue.
Kind regards and success to all,

I agree with you. It would also be in the asker's best interest to specify PRO because it might discourage people who don't know much about the topic from giving Non-PRO answers. | | | Kim Metzger Mexiko Local time: 16:51 Deutsch > Englisch

Hi Belkis - we have quite a few heavy askers who are basically too lazy to provide decent context, do their own research before asking, enter the appropriate classifications, pro vs. non-pro, social sciences, etc. vs. "other" and so on. It's also also often too much work for them to close their questions and enter the selected answer in the glossary or thank folks for their help.
It might be appropriate for you to contact the moderator and ask for intervention. The moderator may feel that a message to the asker would be the right thing to do if we're looking at someone who repeatedly ignores the rules.
Best wishes, Kim

Hi Belkis, Kim,
Contacting the moderator taking care of the language pair in question would indeed be the most appropriate way of dealing with such misclassifications, and to raise awareness among careless askers. That said, there are also many members with KudoZ editing rights who are able to reclassify questions "on the fly".
On a related note, questions submitted by non-registered users always appear as Non-PRO by default and have to be reclassified in most cases.
Regards,
Steffen | |

I also agree with both Kim and Steffen.
I was recently granted KudoZ editing rights and make those changes as much as I can, and I think I just did so on a question you were answering, Belkis.
You (and other readers) might also ask a moderator to grant you editing rights, that way you can instantly change questions from non--Pro to Pro. The more of us there are, the better it will work. | | | BelkisDV Vereinigte Staaten Local time: 18:51 Spanisch > Englisch + ... Thank you Henry, Kim and everyone else. Kim is right, lazy askers all over the place who are very eager to get right answers to solve their problems but not so eager to abide by the site's rules.
Thank you also for suggesting I contact a Moderator, the thought had actually escaped me.
And Henry, I did ask to have editing rights for the same reasons you mentioned; however my request was denied based on (and I quote): "Thank you for your offer but we must decline because we believe you do not possess the right qualities...please don't take it personal, you're a valuable KudoZ contributor".
So there you have it. A trained monkey can move questions and reclassify them but evidently I'm not a trained monkey.
(No offense to those of you who have earned that right, what I mean is that evidently I do not meet their 'requirements' - which by the way, I wonder exactly what they are.
Cheers to all,
Belkis

At least you'd have my support, I've seen you around enough to know that you're certainly far better than a "trained monkey".
As far as I'm concerned it would be best to completely eliminate the "Pro and Non-Pro" classification. There are not too many "I love you" type questions here, and even then sometimes one needs to be discerning about factors such as local usage, etc.

The worst thing is when somebody asks something really dumb like "House" and I always tend to "vote for NON pro" but that never happens..all I´ve gained is wasted my right clicking finger a little bit more. Pro and non pro just sucks! So I would get rid of it also. | | | BelkisDV Vereinigte Staaten Local time: 18:51 Spanisch > Englisch + ... THEMENSTARTER If it only were up to us! | Sep 15, 2006 |
Thank you Henry and Roberto,
I'm with you 100%, it's arbitrary, subjective and a tad annoying. I would get rid of it also.
The day before yesterday someone posted a highly technical question in an unheard of field and their explanation was: "I'm making this an EASY question because it should be easy for anyone who's familiar with the subject". I had to laugh, it's pretty hilarious every now and then!

I leave you with that thought and I bid you all a fond "au revoir" for now.

I was once enquired why I was no longer able to edit questions and was told I would have to be "proposed" by someone, as if joining some exclusive golf club.
My fault for having such terrible KudoZ behaviour, I suppose.

From the KudoZ FAQ:
"PRO questions are those that are asked by OR that are suitable for professional translators.
Non-PRO questions are those that are asked by people who are not professional translators, and that can be answered by any bilingual person without the aid of a dictionary
When applying the above definitions, detach yourself from your own background/specialisation and think of a - hypothetical - randomly selected bilingual person. Is it likely that this person would be able to produce a good translation of the term or phrase in question (and in the particular context shown) from the top of his/her head? If not, it is a PRO question."
Those who do not have the "Mark Pro" button should remember to click on the "Vote to make PRO" button - three votes will reclassify the question. | | | Özden Arıkan Deutschland Local time: 00:51 Mitglied Englisch > Türkisch + ... Revisiting the said discussion: | Sep 15, 2006 |

Hi Özden,
That indeed was the initial thread and your answer was as follows:
"The final update is, if you have at least 500 KudoZ points and are interested in being an editor, you can submit a Support Ticket."
........I have 2000-something KudoZ points, so I submitted a Support Ticket and the answer fro ProZ, which I can produce if you wish, was exactly what I stated above.
I would need to be "proposed" by someone.
All I wanted to do was squash repeated questions, something which occurs fairly often when an asker is new to the site (and I AM aware that if a replicated question has one answer it can't be squashed).
Just trying to help, that's all.
But apparently I need someone's "proposal" and another person's approval to help you do your job.
Cheers,
