Pfadangabe

Deutsch > Englisch Technik Software Instruction Manual
"Wenn die CD nicht automatisch startet, öffnen Sie bitte mit dem Windows-Explorer Ihr CD-Laufwerk und klicken Sie doppelt auf die Anwendung SETUP bzw. SETUP.EXE. Sie sehen eine voreingestellte Pfadangabe."

From a software instruction manual. The "Pfad" part of the word is elementary, but I'm not sure about the "Angabe" bit. Or is it redundant? TIA for your help.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jun 11, 2003:
Disagree ... ... with "Vorschlag" being "default". I'm quite certain now that it means "prompt" in this context.

"Voreingestellt" might well be "default" though. "Default path specification" has a rather good ring to it.
Non-ProZ.com Jun 11, 2003:
Next Sentence: "Sie knnen diesen Vorschlag bernehmen und brauchen die Pfadangabe nicht zu ndern."

Are the "Vorschlag" and "Angabe" related?

The (default/)predefined path will be displayed.

voreingestellt means default/predefined

Maybe it's better to say predefined, because most of the time it will not be the same path.

For example, during the setup process (i.e. probably the installation of a program), the setup wizerd will offer you a path like "C:/program files/this program" and this path always changes depending on the program you wish to install.

Vorschlag in your second sentence refers indeed to the Pfadangabe. It means that you can accept the specified/predefined path without changing it. (Vorschlag actually means proposal, i.e. you can accept the path that was suggested without changing it).
Mostly, when you install a software, the path they offer you is the one I mentioned above, so you don't have to change it, unless you have a different directory for saving program files.

I hope I managed to explain it clearly. It is very clear in my head, since I have also worked as a programmer and made a few installtions myself. I hope I could at least put you on the right track.

path specification

You specify (angeben) a path.

I was the in-house translator for a computer software book company that translated Data Becker books into English. I wish I had a quarter for every time I translated that very term "Pfadangabe".

destination folder

Since this is a user manual, I would say that "path specifications" or any derivatives are a bit on the technical side.

Destination folder is the standard used in Windows Setup programs.

"You will be presented with a default destination folder. You can accept this suggested folder, in which case you do not need to change the destination folder".

P.S. I'm a software engineer myself.
