Hello to all of you, I hope everyone is doing just great.
I am a recently graduated pharmacist, but I have been longing to join the translation team for some time now. During college, I did a lot of translations and subtitles for off-legal sites, and slowly, I began to like this more and more. I started to search CAT Tools and watch some videos, but the reality is that I still don't know where to start.
My current goals are:

- Become proficient in Eng->Por translations;
- Learn which qualifications are needed, and where I can get them;
- Get advice and knowledge from experts;
- Make a long-term plan to improve and learn new target languages (such as Spanish and French).
So, I'd be grateful if you could give me some advice, books to read, YouTube channels to watch, or any other kind of help. ▲ Collapse

My advice for subtitles would be to ditch the off-legal sites, because they are making money from that website with ads, and most importantly your subtitles on that website are global and free to use by anyone.

Hi Rafael,
If you don't know where to start I would advise you to join a translators association and go along to some of their events. You will get to talk to translators in person and make some useful contacts. Some of them run courses for newcomers - the ITI certainly does. You could also consider taking the Diploma in Translation to get a qualification under your belt.

I won't lie to you though ... it's tough getting started in translation for anyone and the industry is in a state of upheaval at the moment, with even professionals who have been successfully been making a living for decades talking about (or actually) leaving due to the takeover of machine translation and the associated issue of low rates from agencies. There might be easier ways to make a living for someone with a pharmacy degree.
Also, I would definitely not advise you to focus on new target languages. Most translators translate only into their native language, or at any rate a language they have native-like competence in. I'd stick with one language combination personally - there are enough other things to learn. ▲ Collapse

Seems the translation bug bit you a while ago. Becoming a member of the local translation association in your country or region is a solid step. But translators these days are a dime a dozen; the market is saturated with supply (number of translators). If you enjoy turning well-written texts, if you enjoy reading a variety of books and texts equally (I'm not talking about reading fiction, that's easy) and if you cherish the challenge of doing proper research (and you already have a good foundati... Here in Brazil, besides of being a crime, piracy is kind of popular, there are lots of people making subtitles for movies or anime. So I believe many professional subtitling professionals started on their own, subtitling for these kind of sites (that have subtitles or movies for download).

Well, it's very real, and it's very different from all other crime movies, like euro crime movies are pretty close to real, and usa crime and uk crime are very dramatic.
