| | | | BabelOn-line Vereinigtes Königreich Local time: 18:03 Englisch > Französisch + ... How do we strike back? | Dec 18, 2013 |
João's site is indeed excellent, he did a great job creating this resource. Most recommended.
I found all the dodgy emails addresses I ever needed to check listed on his site, so he de facto created the most comprehensive resource.
I am however wondering how we could hit back. Being aware is good, but this is a bit like the Nigerian scam: as it is a game of numbers, scammers will carry on for ever, always hoping to catch just one more guy - there is not cost in sending... As an agency, I am now fairly certain I will never be caught by these scams – be it because after reading João's site, I now check all email addresses on João's site + phone numbers.
But I still receive these scams and this is damaging proper linguists reputation and our business. Gmail will not even consider banning addresses on spurious privacy grounds.
Any idea, anyone? ▲ Collapse | | | Striking back | Dec 19, 2013 |
First, thank you, BabelOn-line, for the kind words about my TRANSLATOR SCAMMERS DIRECTORY.

See more First, thank you, BabelOn-line, for the kind words about my TRANSLATOR SCAMMERS DIRECTORY.
Second, and most importantly, how do we strike back? Here's my two cents about it:
1. Scammers live off anonymity and off a zero footprint on the Internet. Once publicly exposed, their anonymity and Internet stealthiness is gone, thus giving them the publicity they don't want, and the online presence that they don't have. Scream, yell, and raise hell, making their names and emails known and public. Post them everywhere you can. In most cases, once actively exposed, scammers just disable the email addresses they've used, and that particular scam is over. That's why scammers use one, two, five email addresses for each identity they use.
2. Insert an updated photo on your CV and ask your prospective clients to confirm each other's identity on Skype via video chat. Or, at least, via mobile phone: scammers get really uncomfortable when you tell them you want to talk to them on the phone. Excuses given range from "I don't use phone for business", to "my camera is broken" or to "I can't talk now, I have a sore throat"...
3. Remember: this is, in fact, a war of attrition, which, given the current, and growing, level of public awareness and exposure, the scammers cannot and will not win.
4. Everybody -- translators and translation companies -- should ALWAYS follow sound risk management rules. This excellent article by Enrique Cavalitto is a must-read about this issue: ProZ.com series on Risk Management: Scammers who steal translations

I received 2 new offers, so I update a list:

Strojový překlad příspěvků v angličtině je určitě srozumitelný.
Přidal jsem další 2 odesilatele. João vyjmenoval osvědčené metody sebeobrany.
Praví překladatelé mohou svoji identitu prokázat pomocí vizuální komunikace, protože webové kamery a kamery v mobilu jsou běžné.
