Thanks for trying, but to properly show the link, you need to embed it in "url" and "/url", whereby the quotes are replaced by "[" and "]", respectively:

And thinking the unthinkable for a moment, if google went offline for some reason, which search engines would be worth turning to for their multilingual features?

I also use www.alltheweb.com and www.copernic.com. I downloaded copernic just a few days ago but I find it impressive: it's kind of a meta-search engine, which searches in several search engines (including google, I think). The interface is not so user-friendly IMHO.

I like Alltheweb because it is more accurate than Google when you want to restrict your search to a particular language. I use this a lot when searching for obscure Swiss German or Austrian German terms that I can't find anywhere else. I search for the German word, but specify that the language is English. This helps to find bilingual websites where this word appears. I use Google when all else fails, because it returns the greatest number of hits.

I like Vivisimo for its clustering. It presents search results in categorized folders. This is useful when you anticipate getting a lot of hits. I also like Teoma, because it sometimes points you to useful link collections on the topic of the search.
One difficulty I've been having with Google recently is that some of the higher ranking results are actually to spurious "search engines" rather than to real information. This does not happen with the other search engines.

The site:uk operator will presumably only find sites with co.uk, org.uk etc in the URL. The problem is that many non-US organizations use .com .net etc and these cannot be identified as country-specific. ▲ Collapse

From today on vivisimo.com is my first choice.
