"We used professional translators"
Most of my possible responses would be along these lines:
- "Er, no you (insert expletive of choice) didn't"
- "If so, then you've been had"...
It beggars belief what companies like this, which is "going to crowdsource its translation work and also plans to float for a bilion dollars" try to get away with. I'll be sure to avoid them like the plague.

"Would we recommend crowdsourcing the translation of legal content, highly technical materials, or financial content? Nope, we would recommend professional translation from translators skilled in that vertical"
Which I undertand as:
- You don´t really use professional translators
- You assume that technical, legal and financial materials are much more important than your clients websites and applications and therefore deserve more care and professional work.

Nothing new under the sun although it always makes you wanna push the wall. Hey why not ask for legal advice to your mother too, uh? I'm sure she's watched a few episodes of Law & Order or Boston Legal, or even Perry Mason, right? And who hasn't seen Wall Street with Michael Douglas? I mean... you can be a broker in no time and ride the bull and fight the crisis, why bother with professionals...

I fail to see a point there. Quite frankly, I get hired now and then to fix/redo cheap human translation that was bluntly rejected by the end-client. Very honestly, some free online machine translation contrivances actually do it better than cheap wannabe translators.

Very honestly, some free online machine translation contrivances actually do it better than cheap wannabe translators.
Crowdsourcing means channeling free human translations done by people with varied levels if incompetence, who don't qualify yet to be cheap wannabe translators. However this process requires considerable management work to chop the whole job in parts, assign these to individuals, follow up on delivery, and then assemble all these parts together. With machine translation, all they have to do is to shove the material through the engine, and it's done instantly.
This is why I think that while the evolution of machine translation poses no potential risk to truly professional translation specialists, it will - in a not so distant future - wipe out cheap amateur translators from the market, as well as the outsourcers who use their services. ▲ Collapse
