Same here! One thing I have learned through my academic training is to pay attention to the reliability and repeatability. Besides the volume and weight measurement tools, I also love to use timers. Whenever I am boiling eggs or steaming a fresh bass fish, I will set up the timer for the exact time I want, and then be rest assured that the results won't be too bad.

What Recipes? Aug 19, 2013

I remember once being invited to a sister department manager's home for dinner while I was still in Poughkeepsie. He became a good friend that I still stay in touch with to this day. He and and his wife Jean were both from Taiwan, getting their Ph.D.s in the U.S. way back in the mid '70s.

During dinner conversation, his wife brought up the fact that the majority of Americans are sticklers for cooking with recipes. Many of her dinner guests love her cooking, and constantly ask her for recipes, which she always finds humorous; 'cause her mental response is always: "what recipes"?

It reflects the typical Western philosophy on life and work ethic.

In the first several years of my Ph.D study, while I considered myself belonging to the normal, I didn't really know what research was like. Then, at one point, I finally figured out how to do research, and that was the time when I was close to graduation and my head was permanently damaged.
