Again, the more I hear the less I know. The dictionary really just says "secondary school" for all of these. Anyone know the correct British English translation for these? They are listed next to each other:
"Studenten von Haupt-, Realschule und Gymnasien..."
"Studenten von Haupt-, Realschule und Gymnasien..."

: However I've been told that "grammar school" has been out of use since the 60s. Besides it also leads to higher education. This is confusing. Why not leave it untranslated since the system is completely different and untranslatable without an explanation?

: Seems sensible and grammar schools are indeed still up and running, albeit to a lesser extent

Well, secondary school leading to higher education only aims at making clear the difference to the standard secondary school and in terms of translation technique corresponds to a cultural elucidation for non-German speakers who are not familiar to the concept of a tripartite school system. As for grammar school, do you really think it has been out of use since the 60s? (please check out the grammar school homepages below - and there are many more):

Lower Secondary School, Intermediate Secondary School, Upper Secondary School (Grammar School)
Lower Secondary School, Intermediate Secondary School, Upper Secondary School/Grammar School
Hi David,
In Germany, there are three secondary school types:
Hauptschule - Lower Secondary School
... which leads to Hauptschulabschluss/Lower Secondary School Leaving Certificate
Realschule - Intermediate Secondary School
...which leads to "Mittlere Reife"/Intermediate (Secondary) School Leaving Certificate - equivalent to GCSE
Gymnasium - Upper Secondary School/Grammar School
... which leads to Abitur - equivalent to A-levels
I would, however, always use the German terms in a translation and offer an English explanation if possible - might be a bit difficult, though, when translating diplomas/certificates/transcripts
