Proposed translation:
X shall at its own expense take out builder’s liability insurance, *in the interests of* Y and as if Y were the policy-holder and insured, with a minimum insurance sum of x Mio. EUR for personal injury and damage to property respectively.
Is my rendering of 'im Interesse von' correct or does this mean that 'Y is an interested party'?
Any help much appreciated.

Your translation of the phrase seems fine to me.
Dietl/Lorenz: im Interesse von = in the interest of; on behalf of

: wrong context for in the interest of. almost entered on behalf of but is used more when meant as a helpful gesture/added extra, not as a legal requirement

: as I said to Michael, I was going to enter that but it seems to be used more as a voluntary gesture than as a legal requirement.

I have seen it in contracts and if so signs sth on behalf of a third party it takes the mean of "in representation of", but I agree that is seems less formal

: yes, im interesse von is just a little more old-fashioned, to be expected in legalese

Deutsch term (edited):
im Interesse von Y
with Y as beneficiary
Or something like that. Writeaway also has the right idea.
