Peer comment(s):

agree MMUlr : I found this also, but: this incision is a subcostal approach; what is meant here is the suprajugular approach to the thyroidal gland ... (?) - the "subcostal" was a problem for me, but here is a "Kocher" reference: http://nobelprize.org/medicine/articles

curvilinear "necklace" incision

Problem is that in Germany the "Kocher-Kragenschnitt" is used for the removal of the thyroid gland, but you may not find the same name "Kocher" for this surgical procedure in English (only the subcostal incision --> first suggestion).

You will only find "horizontal incision" above the sternum, or "(curvilinear) necklace incision".

Now I found the Kocher reference, too, in connection with the thyroid gland - e.g., http://www.ispub.com/ostia/index.php?xmlFilePath=journals/ij... - I was, however, confused about the descripton of a \"subcostal approach for cholecystectomy\", also named \"Kocher\": \"Pulmonary function after cholecystectomy performed through Kocher\'s incision, ...\"

So, both terms may be used ...?

Trying to summarize what we/you have:

For cholecystectomy:
English: Kocher\'s incision (for cholecystectomy) --> German: Rippenbogenrandschnitt

For thyroidectomy:

English (used more often): horizontal incision / \"necklace\" incision --> German: Kocher-Kragenschnitt

English (used more rarely): Kocher incision (or Kocher\'s incision)
--> German: Kocher-Kragenschnitt (Kocher\'scher Kragenschnitt is obsolete)
