I have been asked by a client to align Word documents including little amount of lists. I need some advice what is a fair rate for such work.

Maybe you charge by volume? If so, how much of translation rate is your aligning rate? Or maybe you could give some other indication?

In general, for services that cannot be charged by word count, it is reasonable to charge by the hour. The actual amount per hour will depend on the market in your region. Make sure to set a minimum amount. The client will have to trust your timekeeping. Often, you are asked to provide an estimate of the time required. The best would be to charge by the hour. The time needed will vary depending on the differences between source and target segments (i.e. joined/split sentences).
Using the aligment module of a translation tool, e.g. Trados WinAlign or DejaVu's alignment tool will speed things up a bit.

If you have to charge by wordcount you should charge a quarter (or maybe a third) of your normal rate, provided you are using an alignment tool.
