Hi,

I have been working as a translator for 5 years. I have been working freelance for a bureau for the past 3, but with periods with no to little work and low rates, I can't afford to stay. (My rates there is 300 NOK per hour.)

I'm looking around for other jobs, but I have no idea what rates I'm going to suggest. Someone asked me for my rates of human translation, MPTE, and revision. It's from English to Norwegian.

Is £0.10 per word a good price for translation? I don't want to charge to little or too much.
What can I suggest when it comes to MPTE and revision?

I'm trying and trying to look for other people's rates and it's very diffuse.

We don’t work the same language pairs, but let’s say that my minimum for agencies is 0.09€/word for ES/PT and 0.10€/word for EN/PT + FR/PT + IT/PT and I believe EN/NO pays higher. My editing rate is half my translation rate and my proofreading rate is one quarter my translation rate. How much higher depends entirely on several factors - what the potential new client requires: only translation (that’s rare)? or translation + edition + proofing (more common). Over the years, the work I have done to direct clients tend to be very large projects (over 50,000 words).Collapse

Your TL is known as an expensive language–take advantage of that!
Regarding pricing, Susie Jackson and Corinne McKay give very useful advice. One strategy suggested by Susie Jackson is to determine your minimum and ideal income, then figure out how much you need to charge to achieve them (taking into account holidays, sickness, CPD, etc.).

One thing that has helped me stabilise my business was to find clients who accepted the minimum rate I needed to charge, then demand a higher rate from the following prospects. This way, you have regular clients for a somewhat acceptable price, and you can hope for other clients who actually bring you good money.

calculation of costs Sep 25, 2024

Hi,

I suggest you take the time to familiarize yourself with the calculation of costs, e.g. https://help.getsorted.de/en/articles/5488491-pricing-as-a-freelancer.

It's not so hard, everyone can do this.

Best regards,

Tanja
