Dear all,
Please find here a copy of the message I\'ve sent to ProZ and TCR-D one hour
ago, but which has, strangely, not found its way. My only purpose is to warn
you against proposals which are - à double titre (as we say in French, i.e.
for two reasons) - suspect.
Copy of the message sent to TCR-D and ProZ :

Dear colleagues,
Those of you who subscribe (freely or not) to ProZ have certainly received
this astonishing job offer (ref: http://www.proz.com/job/27930). A sex site
is asking for the translation En>Fr of their \"text\": i.e. 60 source words.
They offer USD 0.10/source word, what could sound normal, if this site was
not what it is, if translating such jargon into another language was easy,
which is not at all the case, and if they were not telling us -without any
shame - : \"This is a very small project, only about 60 words. So, if you
have minimum charges, please don\'t respond\" (sic). How polite they are to
tell us \" we exploit women, men, (maybe children) who are starving and
despaired, so you will not be surprised if our only way to deal with you,
translators, is to exploit you too\" !!!
This a true scandal.
Excuse me, but I must leave you to go to the \"vomitorium\".

While I understand your frustration, there\'s a few things we need to distinguish here.
First of all, I would object to ProZ exercising control regarding the content of jobs offered (unless these were clearly illegal, of course, or if the posting in itself contained offensive material). The problem with these things is where to draw the line: if we have a problem with someone looking for a translation of adult material (which some may consider offensive), what\'s the next st... The problem with these things is where to draw the line: if we have a problem with someone looking for a translation of adult material (which some may consider offensive), what\'s the next step? Ban politically offensive material? Prohibit anything that may offend someone?
As far as the \"no minimum rates\" policy goes, I prefer people being open about it. Don\'t get me wrong - I wouldn\'t consider getting started for this amount. But someone else might (who might have done similar jobs before, and can get it done in a quarter of an hour); and that\'s his or her sovereign decision.

Although this kind of material is not my cup of tea, I do not see the problem with them asking for a small translation.
I do not endorse people working in that kind of business (either at the promotional end or as the people posing in the pictures etc)
I have not looked at the site btw but what makes you think that they exploit the people in the pictures? I would not personally apply for the job because I do not endorse their line of work AND because I have a minimum charge.
Like Ralf, I also appreciate that they mention this up front (min. charge folks need not apply) - It saves everyone\'s time.
But in the end, I LIKE having the freedom of choice and I would be upset if Proz would ban an ad such as this one because the ad itself is fine.
We all fight hard to keep our freedom of choice - let\'s not roll-back the clock

I did not see the advert at the time actually - but I agree wholeheartedly with Catherine. There are limits of decency, and it is quite easy to know where to draw the line: the pornographic industry is offensive to the majority of people.
Whenever I do a Google search, I am told that the search is done with \"safesearch on\", in order to exclude any offensive material. I do not personally see why Proz.com should be devoid of all moral standards.

As regards payment for 60 words, I normally do translations of that length for my regular customers for free - however, these poor sods with their pornographic business obviously don\'t have any friends. ▲ Collapse | |

I fully accept your view. (BTW while the background of that job obviously was potentially offensive, the job posting was not.) However - and that is my main point - it should be up to you (and everyone else on this site) to decide what to accept and what to decline. I would not hesitate to remove any posting which in itself was offensive, but as long as everyone can decide whether or not to accept, I strongly believe ProZ should not start policing the content of jobs. ▲ Collapse | | | Nathalie M. I do not endorse it either, but I am not blind to the fact that if there was no money to make in that business, it would not have grown so much or survived this long.

I saw the post, and as mentioned in my previous note (above), the posting was not offensive in itself, it was well writen and they stated up-front the type of work, and that people who charge minimum rates (like myself) need not apply. I appreciated their honesty and also that they did not waste my time by clearly stating what the job entailed.
I prefer to make my own decisions as to which jobs I will go for or not bother with, than having Proz decide on my behalf.
As long as the post itself is *clean* and not *illegal* - I feel that it can go up, and if no one bids, then the job posters will have their answers right there and then... they will know where we stand in regards to their industry.
I do not endorse cigarette smoking either, and those ads & packaging are translated, millions die of lung cancer & emphysema, millions of young children pick up smoking etc... But the jobs are done, they are handled by people who do not have problems with this per say.
It is about the freedom of choice (the good, the bad and the ugly!)
Peace,
Nathalie

There is a difference between \"offensive\" and \"illegal\", e.g. pornography involving minors: working for illegal organizations makes you, at least theoretically, an accessory to a crime.
Some countries have stricter laws than others and Europe is getting stricter.
For my own part, I gave up pornography around the time my acne disappeared and wish I could say the same thing about my smoking.
