That's good Jan 15, 2010

Dear Suzanne,

It was a great news. I experienced a great earthquake on Jan 17th, 15 years ago in my home town KOBE.
I remember that we needed fresh water before anything else. Haiti looks more serious than KOBE. I just hope their sufferance will be the least.

Best,
Peishun

A group has just been set up on Facebook to be available for any language needs in the Haiti crisis: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=245649094887.

If you are a translator or interpreter, please join and invite all your translator and interpreter friends and students. We will be posting regular updates on how you can help.

If anyone finds out a way we can help directly as interpreters or translators, don't hesitate to post on Facebook or on this thread.

And if you know of an organization that needs interpreters, over the phone or on the ground, encourage them to join and post on the wall.

What we can do in the first place is helping people in languages. As I am from the country susceptible to earthquake, it is not a tragedy of somewhere else.

Charities/NGOs and the Earthquake in Haiti Jan 18, 2010

I have received some e-mails regarding which charities/ngos would be the best to donate to for the current relief effort in Haiti. I suppose this is due to the fact that I have done mission work there myself, and my husband is Haitian and has lived there his whole life. I have and continue to encourage people to donate to well established charities whose donation use practices can be verified. My charity of choice is Canadian Lutheran World Relie... See more

I suppose this is due to the fact that I have done mission work there myself, and my husband is Haitian and has lived there his whole life. I have and continue to encourage people to donate to well established charities whose donation use practices can be verified. My charity of choice is Canadian Lutheran World Relief (www.clwr.org), but of course, there are many others that have been posted on this topic thread that are doing wonderful work in Haiti as well, such as the Red Cross, World Vision, OxFam, Doctors with Borders, Samaritan's Purse, and UNICEF, among others.

Nicholas, thank you for taking the initiative and starting the Haiti translators/interpreters group on Facebook. I have joined the group and also added my husband's details, he is available to help on the ground in Haiti. I believe we met in November 2009 at the Pre-Holiday Powwow in Toronto.

Christopher, thank you for the Milengo link setting out what translators/interpreters can do for the Haiti crisis.

Thanks again to all Prozians for their support. My husband is in Gonaives now, which is 3-4 hours away from Port-au-Prince. There are still lots of problems as people flood out of the capital to other cities for refuge.

Suzanne, yes I do remember attending the Powwow you organized so wonderfully. Thanks for that.

I am so happy your husband is safe. Thank you for joining the group and for offering your help. Many organizations are starting to post needs on the wall, so word is getting out.

Send regards to your husband. I hope he stays safe.

Urgent need for Kreyol speakers/translators Jan 23, 2010

By far the greatest need for Kreyol interpreters right now is the translation of SMS messages sent from people on the ground in Haiti to the Red Cross database. These must be translated for people on the ground to know what the needs are.

The volunteers helping there are doing a great job, but they need help ASAP. Over 1000 short text messages need translation now. Easiest way to lend a hand to Haiti from your own home/office. All you need is an Internet connection.

Please spread the word to any and all Creole speakers you know. Thank you.
