We see it every day in KudoZ, and that's what makes KudoZ so great - the pooling of knowledge.

PS that is *not* a quote, famous or otherwise!!

here are my preferred quotes... May 31, 2007

I have two quotes that I really like and in principle agree with, here they are:

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends.

Martin Luther King

Be wiser than other people if you can; but do not tell them so.

Lord Chersterfield

There are so many, but two immediately spring to mind:

George Orwell in Animal Farm: "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others".

Groucho Marx: "I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member". (I assume the Groucho Club in London's Soho was named as a result of this quote).

Nice (but naughty off-topic, according to some!) topic.
Jenny.

Hitch always had a good line Jun 1, 2007

Hitchcock had some good lines - although maybe not as many as Sam Goldwyn.

"All actors are cattle" - which got him in a bit of trouble so:

"I never said all actors are cattle; what I said was all actors should be treated like cattle"

and

"There is nothing to winning, really. That is, if you happen to be blessed with a keen eye, an agile mind, and no scruples whatsoever" - Alfred Hitchcock

And of course Dylan Thomas, who stood up in his club and announced

"I have just had 18 double whiskeys in a row. I do believe that's a record"

He promptly passed out and was dead by the end of the day. It's certainly a way to go.

Oscar Wilde's quotes Jun 2, 2007

My favourite quotes are many of Oscar Wilde's quotes. here's a few:

In married life three is company and two none.

A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.

All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That's his.

I can resist everything but temptation.

I think it was O. Wilde who said: "The prime cause of divorce is marriage". Can anyone remember who said: "The tomb of love is marriage"?
Thank you.

As far as I know, Robert, it's a popular saying. Somebody of course must have started it (probably a wretched husband or wife) but it's just a proverb. Maybe somebody here will know better.

"Whatever doesn't kill me makes me stronger" (by Nietzsche) was one of my favorites, until challenged by a cynical friend: "Whatever doesn't kill me may well leave me crippled!"

And I'm sure this one should have an English translation, but I'm also sure it wouldn't be as striking and precise (at least if *I* attempted to put it in English):
"Man ist nicht Mensch, weil man geboren ist, man muß Mensch werden" (by O. Kokoschka)

May I add two by Voltaire:

"Dans ce pays-ci [Angleterre] il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un amiral pour encourager les autres". (Candide)

and

"Si Dieu n'existait pas, il faudrait l'inventer". Épitres, xcvi.

I think Mark Twain was referring to the American spelling of words right? I simply love American spelling because it's like a mini-"revolution" in the English language.
