Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone could offer me any advice. I have been working full time as a freelancer for two years now and I mostly translate sales/marketing documents and websites, etc. Which is great (not complaining!!), but I would love to make a move towards carrying out more paid translations in the field of International Development.

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone could offer me any advice. I have been working full time as a freelancer for two years now and I mostly translate sales/marketing documents and websites, etc. Which is great (not complaining!!), but I would love to make a move towards carrying out more paid translations in the field of International Development.
I have always been very interested in this subject and it was even the topic of my university thesis for my masters in translation. I was advised that in order to work in this field I should carry out volunteer translations and get involved with lots of charity work in order to become familiar with the terms etc on a practical level. I have been regularly carrying out volunteer translations ever since, and I now live and work in a developing country, and volunteer with marine conservation and rural education charities in my spare time.
I have sent my CV and portfolio off to many NGOs but to no avail - even some that I have carried out volunteer translations for. I love doing the volunteer translations and will always do some, but I would love to get some paid work in this field too. Does anyone have and ideas/suggestions on how I could do this?

Has the UK changed that much since I left 17 years ago?

DO update your profile. It was the first thing I set out to see upon reading your post.
What you say made me curious: what provokes your interest in international development? What organizations have you collaborated with? What kind of work did you do? (portfolio samples?)

Those would certainly be the first things I'd look up if I were an outsourcer. (As a freelancer, I can understand some reluctance towards "getting personal" on a profile page addressed to a general public, but that's precisely the point of a profile page, I guess - stressing the distinguishing/differentiating factors).
I guess the elliptical question you should be answering there is, "why choose me for this kind of work". And while a sincere interest may not be the only thing people look for, it would count some way in their choice. ▲ Collapse
