So much for investment in future international diplomacy, business and trade! ▲ Collapse | | | From what I heard | May 9, 2011 |
From what I heard from one of my British teachers, he had a colleague of his that used to give classes there, in University of Westminster. My teacher told me he had recently that University has closed (nothing I have ever heard before) and his colleague fired.
Found it quite strange and made me raise an eyebrow, but felt lazy to investigate.

Another factor is that interpreting courses seemed to be a crucial area for the University of Westminster itself. It's not like it's a top notch university all around, but in this particular area they really stood out, with AIIC, EMCI and stuff.
It must have been expensive to run though.
It's also a shame because they went on accepting applications and interviewing candidates for September 2011 entry. | |

It is a real shame. Although it's a bit odd, since the course was almost twice as expensive as other "normal" courses. On the other hand - they now have an MA in Interpreting. It's not EMCI any more and it also covers consecutive and PS. Maybe they figured this will be a better idea.

Depends on what tuition fees they collected and what sort of wages the teachers were paid. I'm not sure about the fees they charged for MA studies, hey (used to) run wildly expensive one-week courses which I'm sure helped rake in some money for the running costs.
Here's one:

The Conference Interpreting Department at the University of Westminster is planning its summer courses for 2011. We intend to run a six-day intensive course for conference interpreters working with English B from 25 - 30 July and/or 1-6 August.
The course will include lectures on the British legal system and English today, sessions on English enhancement and voice coaching as well as interpreting practice. There will be six hours of class a day and the fee is €1200.00.
That's 200 EUR per participant per day for the classes only, meals and accommodation are not included. The course was confirmed back in March, by the way. The title of the aiic.net news piece seems to refer to the cancellation of this course ("Short Course with English B, Summer 2011") but then it says in the body that the MA course was closed - I'm guessing that both were killed off.

What a shame. | May 9, 2011 |
MA in Interpreting that they are now offering is definitely not a better idea. The amount of simultaneous interpreting involved in the course is minuscule, no B language is offered and you can take only one C. While it may work for some people, in the broad scheme of things it cannot be even compared to the previous course.
Competition to get into other schools will not be stiffer, because deadlines to apply are now long past. Perfect timing to announce closing a course, isn't it? | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » University of Westminster - what is going on?
