New version of Abbyy Finereader - impressions?

Hi all,

I just noticed that Finereader 9 is out. Some improvements are listed:

Did anyone have the chance to upgrade yet? What are your impressions? Worth the 99 EUR, for those running older versions?

I'm ready to upgrade if the new version will generate tables where the height of rows is not fixed. Otherwise I'll stay with version 8.

I only just noticed your thread five minutes ago, and I have already got it installed now. If it has 35% greater recognition accuracy I absolutely cannot afford not to upgrade.

I'll report in a couple of days how I like it.

I bought it after reading your post. I've just tried it with a complicated form I have to use every month to invoice for work sent to me weekly. I used AFR 8 on this form two or three years ago, and the Word version it produced needed a lot of work to get it to look right, but I finally managed it. When printed, it comes out rather smaller than the original document.

Next time I have to send one of these forms, I'll do so using both versions, and find out if my client is satisfied with the unprintable new version or if their reaction is unprintable.

Heinrich, why don't you download the trial and find out for us all, it's good for 50 pages within 15 days.

Hi Jan.
My company just bought FineReader 9.0 (the first version we've owned and we had so many troubles with the formatting once scanned into Word that we asked for our money back. Have you heard of others that may be more Word friendly?

Hi Karen,

This might not be the answer you want, but Abbyy FR is the real deal!

Search the fora here on Proz, there is concensus that FR beat Scansoft as well as ReadIris hands down. You can try the aforementioned software as well, but I strongly encourage you to give FR another chance.

If you want a cheaper alternative to FR, you should look at Abbyy PDF Tranformer. For a start, it's lessi intimidating, and more steps are autoamtized.
The downside is less flexibility, but since it uses the same OCR technology as its bigger brother, the results are brilliant. I can't live without either of them.
