Beim CAN-BUS werden alle gleichberechtigten Steuergeräte über einen seriellen Bus miteinander verbunden, d.h. alle Datenlaufen hintereinander, also seriell, über zwei Datenleitung und werden von allen Steuergeräten empfangen und ausgewertet.
Durch diese Vernetzung benötigt das elektrische System erheblich weniger Leitungen und Kabel. Weitere Vorteile liegen in der leichten Konfigurierbarkeit des Gesamtsystems, problemloser Erweiterbarkeit und der Möglichkeit einer zentralen Diagnose. Im Unterschied zum Kabelbaum erkennt und korrigiert das Netzwerkprotokoll Übertragungsfehler.
Jeder ***CAN-BUS-Teilnehmer*** verfügt über einen CAN-Controller der die Daten aufbereitet, die vom Microcomputer im Steuergerät übermittelt werden sollen und gibt diese an den CAN-Transceiver weiter. Ebenso bekommt der CAN-Controler vom Transceiver Daten, bereitet diese auf und gibt diese an den Microcomputer im Steuergerät weiter.

This topology makes it extremely easy to add other subscribers to the network. Information is transmitted by the individual bus subscribers in the form of so-called messages and distributed over the entire bus.

Discussion
This document (https://www.me-systeme.de/en/support/basics/can-bus-basics) uses both "node" (Knoten) and "participant" (Teilnehmer), but, it seems, in consistently different ways, which I think has something to do with the 7-layer reference model.
