Mein Hund hat Welpenschutz
This phrase has to do with dogs, who automatically are friendly to puppies.
I have come across the term "puppy protection" but am unsure about using it as there is a "Puppy Protection Act" in the US which has absolutely nothing in common with Welpenschutz in this context. Can I still use this term without causing confusion?
Or could I say "My dog is puppy-friendly?"

I was reading something about "puppy license" the other day, which seems to explain my two year old dog's semi-tolerance of my puppy's rough play.

As Dunbar notes, there appears to be a "puppy license" of sorts, possession of which entitles you to be an utter pest without much repercussion. Past the age of 4 ½ months, the "puppy license" expires as hormone levels shift and psychological changes occur. At this point, adult dogs begin to gradually insist on more controlled, respectful interactions from youngsters.

| As already mentioned, I cannot give more source text - the definition of Welpenschutz in English is exactly this tolerance that puppies are often but not always granted with adult dogs. The only misunderstanding came from my initial half-sentence description...hope it is clear now what is meant.. :-) |

Welpenschutz
Welpenschutz ist ein vor allem von Hundehaltern häufig benutzter Begriff, der besagt, dass Welpen angeblich bei älteren Hunden eine weitreichende „Narrenfreiheit“ haben, von ihnen nicht angegangen und nicht verletzt werden. Für menschliche Beobachter stellt sich diese Zurückhaltung häufig als Form besonderer Toleranz dar.
Bekannt ist mittlerweile, dass es einen generellen Welpenschutz nicht gibt. Eine erhöhte Toleranz genießen Welpen nur in ihrem eigenen Rudel oder bei besonders toleranten und an Welpen gewöhnten Hunden; eine generelle Beißhemmung zum Schutz von Welpen kann nicht von jedem Hund erwartet werden.
Bei Wölfen in der freien Wildbahn findet kein Kontakt von Wolfswelpen zu rudelfremden Tieren statt, da die Mutter fremde Tiere niemals an ihre Welpen heranlassen würde. Wolfsrudel besiedeln ihre eigenen großen Territorien, vermeiden jeglichen Kontakt zu anderen Rudeln und hierdurch mögliche Streitigkeiten.

| I apologise for not explaining the term in more detail. The meaning of Welpenschutz is meant exactly as you have mentioned Kim. Thank you for giving the detail I left out. As for more context than that, I cannot unfortunately other than to say that this is a chapter title in a book about dog training. Any additional source text would be a breach of confidentiality. But I think my explanation should speak for itself in what I am looking for. Thanks also for your answer! |
| @writeaway- thanks but I do not know if the original book has yet been published and I believe the confidentiality is a matter between myself and the client. A native speaker (of German) should be able to look at that sentence, see the context meant and translate it. I am liking the translation "puppy license" too but am wanting to wait the full 24 hours anyways...by the way the link you gave is my entry in leo.org - just looking for all the help I can get.
