Schub m 1. attack; (intermittent) episode; 2. (Neur.) episode - in Schüben auftretend polyleptic (e.g. Epilepsie) - in Schüben verlaufen = intermit - in Schüben verlaufend = intermittent - Zwischen zwei Schüben liegend = intercritical; occuring between attacks.
In this case, most likely:
Sub-acute chronic congestive hepatopathy episode with somewhat aged centrilobular necroses.

Guys, seriously? episodes and attacks and chronic are mutually exclusive...really?
As in "chronic asthma attacks"? Or Multiple Sclerosis episodes? One of the hallmark symptoms of CHH is episodes of hepatic tissue necrosis. All this autopsy report is saying is basically the current episode was sub-acute.
As for lirka's statement, you can always restructure the sentence to:
Sub-acute chronic congestive hepatopathy -RELATED episode.... if that makes it more digestable...

oh and PS, the contradiction is in the source itself, subakut and chronisch really belong into the same sentence imho....
subakut wird für eine klinisch weniger heftige Symptomatik als akut, zeitlich zwischen akut und chronisch mit einer Dauer von zwei bis vier Wochen verwendet.
subchronisch entspricht von der Dauer chronisch, aber mit geringer ausgebildeter Symptomatik.
chronisch-progredient ist eine lang anhaltende oder bleibende Erkrankung, in deren Verlauf die Symptome zunehmen oder zusätzliche Symptome entstehen.

: "chronic" and "episode" in your suggested translation don't fit together. An "episode" in medicine is by default temporary, not chronic. In addition, with liver it's not about episodes or attacks ( as opposed to a heart attack, biliary colic, etc.)

The "episodes" associated with CHH are episodes of hepatic tissue necrosis. As for chronic vs. attack/episode, is not chronic asthma a disease manifesting in attacks? And isn't Multiple Sclerosis a chronic disease manifesting in episodes? I could go on..

it's a safe bet to translate it like this, but what do they really mean by it? i think they mean a subacute flare (increase) of transaminases.

: Flare would work, but is a bit colloquial for my taste. What they mean is one of the typical episodes of hepatic tissue necroses that go along with CCH...

thanks, but if this is an autopsy report, then flare isn't the best choice, i think( it's mainly a clinical thing:) I did not realize it was an utopsy report when I posted :)

If you google flare-up you will see that it is used with various diseases that have a "Schub", i.e. MS, IBD, asthma, gout. Just plain "flare" isn't correct.
If you google: - "flare-up + mayo" --- which is the Mayo Clinic website, and the leading group of hospitals in the US, you can see how it is used.
