Deutsch term

stimmungsvoll

Deutsch > Englisch Marketing Tourismus und Reisen Hotel Description
Der Gast hat die Wahl zwischen fünf stimmungs-vollen Massage- und zwei Beautykabinen, zwischen den hocheffektiven Treatments mit exklusiven XXX. Produkten oder authentisch balinesischer Massage-kunst.

Okay, I know, this seems like a no brainer, but I really am having a tough time finding a good English equivalent that would fit into this sentence. I also have a word cap, so it has to be as short as possible. Atmospheric obviously doesn't work, and full of atmosphere sounds completely wrong. Are there any good suggestions out there that would fit in this sentence?

Discussion

Courtney Sliwinski (asker) Apr 2, 2008:
I believe David makes a good point. That is one of the reasons I decided to go with David M.'s answer. The German wording is strange, which makes the translation that much more difficult. Thanks for all the help!
David Seycek Apr 1, 2008:
Wanted to let you know that IMHO „stimmungsvolle Massagekabinen“ is a perfect example of a home-grown & failed authoring effort. Try to substitute „stimmungsvolle“ with any positive attribute that actually collocates with a room (attraktiv gestaltet, zum Wohlfühlen, angenehm, bezaubernd, ...) and then come up with a translation which, in any case, will serve its purpose better than the German.
Courtney Sliwinski (asker) Mar 31, 2008:
I think Beth hit the nail on the head. my native speaking ear just won't allow me to use atmospheric. I just keep think of weather conditions. I must say though, all the responses are great!
Sabine Winter Mar 31, 2008:
Just a note as I'm not overly familiar with the particular field. But from a possible target audience point of view, either "atmospheric" or something like "... rooms with mood stimulating settings" would work for me.
Beth Jones Mar 31, 2008:
(cont'd) it's encountered less often in its other sense: 2) creating a distinctive mood, typically of romance, mystery, or nostalgia : atmospheric lighting.
So the 1st thing one thinks of is the #1 usage...? But yes, otherwise, technically, it's OK
Beth Jones Mar 31, 2008:
I think the dilemma is that the most common usage of this word is in the meteorological sense, e.g. "atmospheric pressure": adj. 1) of or relating to the atmosphere of the earth or (occasionally) another planet: atmospheric conditions such as fog...
Colin Rowe Mar 31, 2008:
Your very description (mood, candles, music, etc.), points to what is surely understood by "atmospheric"...
David Moore (X) Mar 31, 2008:
I'd like to know exactly WHY "atmospheric" doesn't work here - it certainly does for three of your co-native speakers...
Courtney Sliwinski (asker) Mar 31, 2008:
Wonderful suggestions everyone! I guess my greatest problem is that these rooms are probably designed to create a "mood" (i.e. candles, soft music, dim lighting, incense...) is there no good word for this in English? Mood creating room? Mood setting room?!!!!!

ambient

You could use this or atmospheric. However, I personally feel that the word atmospheric sounds a bit too scientific to use in this context. I would go with ambient, as it is often used to describe a positive ambience.
Peer comment(s):

disagree David Moore (X) : Since no pro points are at stake, I feel safe in disagreeing. If "ambient" IS used in this context, IMO it's wrong, as "ambient" really means "to do with the environment"./ I can't honestly say I find "atmospheric" too scientific, either...

Sorry Nicole, but I don't feel that this works here. It sounds too scientific, as Marius said. I stated that I didn't want to use this in my question
Peer comment(s):

agree David Moore (X) : As I said earlier...

Thanks, David!
agree Colin Rowe : I cannot see what is overly "scientific" about atmospheric. It seems like the blindingly obvious word to use in this context, as your examples ably demonstrate.

"in an atmosphere that stimulates your senses"

Vielleicht exegetischer? "Stimmungs-voll" (ist doch hier wirklich mit Bindestrich betont, oder?) wird doch bedeuten, dass die Sinne /der Geist angesprochen werden.

uplifting

Hi Courtney -- Believe me, I feel your pain. Anybody working on tourism translations comes across these impossible "no-brainers" all the time.
My suggestion: another word for stimmungsvoll is impressive = erhebend = uplifting

Would that work for you?

lol
Just to liven up the proceedings even further, this comes to mind too (because -- to comment on my own answer -- "uplifting" has certain "spiritual/religious" connotations as well)
