"Hinweis" text? Jul 18, 2005

I appreciate your clearing this up for me. I will be able to sleep nights now knowing that I only have to deal with ONE set of tax collection agencies.

Just don't forget that for your German clients, you have to add the Hinweis to your invoices about their liability for VAT on the invoice amount....

What should it say in the Hinweis text (in English)?

Non-VAT registered Jul 19, 2005

What does that mean?
If you are a German freelance translator without a VAT ID, you cannot sell your translations to a non-German client?
To do cross-border business you have to have a VAT ID even if you are classified as a small German business (Kleinunternehmer -defined by German law)?

No, it doesn't mean that at all. Because don't forget that this is all about the *buyer* being able claim notional input tax to offset the VAT they'll have to pay to their national tax authorities, not whether *you* charge VAT or not.

Depending on the country of the client, you may well need some sort of proof that you're a business. Normally, the VAT No. is the easiest way of doing this. Because translators aren't required to register in Germany, you may need to furnish some other sort of evidence of your business status. I wouldn't bother about this too much until it actually happens.

Hi Jeremy and thank you for your comment!

How do UK-Translators cross boarder business without a VAT-ID? (see my reply to RobinB ).

I have never had much of a problem. On all my invoices I include a legal mention stating that I am not obliged to be VAT registered, in accordance with British law. I did get one client accuse me of working illegaly. I found it a challenge to respond to that accusation politely. Other than that, I have had no problems.
