Hello all,
While the designer I have hired is busy creating my new site, I am plowing through information on increasing the site's visibility.

While the designer I have hired is busy creating my new site, I am plowing through information on increasing the site's visibility.
Couple of questions:
1. Has anyone used google banners to bring traffic to their translation sites?
2. Does anyone know any good resources for learning about search placement (I am NOT interested in companies that offer to boost my rating for a fee). I'm not scared of reading techie stuff. There was an interesting article in the New York Times a month or so ago that talked about, among other things, how repeating key words all over your site is boring and doesn't work. Anyone read anything good along these lines?
3. Has anyone used Yandex banners to bring Russian traffic to their translation site?
4. Does print advertising seem to be an effective way to bring potential clients to a translation site?
5. A poster in another topic mentioned using a blog as another way to network and bring interested/ing people to your site. This was also mentioned in the Times article. I'd love to hear the experiences of people here...
At this point, I am most interested in hearing about people's experiences specifically increasing traffic to their sites.
Thanks in advance!

They call it "Ad Words" (sponsored links).
It certainly has increased traffic to my website, and it has a very, very low cost.
People searching for "mexico translations" or "traducciones mexico", will find this at the right hand of the screen:

Valery, did you just read the free information on selfpromotion or did you pay for the whole package?
Thanks,

Hi Elizabeth,
As you specifically asked about blogs and I've got one, I thought I'd give you my input. They are a fantastic business asset, for several reasons:
- they allow you to rant on topics that interest you and to get feedback from people willing to engage in discussion
- provided you have interesting content, they make a great impression on potential customers (I've acquired excellent contacts thanks to mine)

- by posting regularly, you add content to your website and make it very dynamic, which Google LOVES; this helps your ranking
- the more posts you add about your job, industry, etc., the more keywords you add to your site, which leads more people to your site
- provided you have interesting content, you get other bloggers/websites linking to you, which helps improve your ranking
- you make contact with all sorts of interesting people!
In short, I highly recommend starting your own blog. The only drawback is that they require a lot of work; well worth it, however, in my opinion.
Another thing: Google Adwords is excellent, and has increased traffic to my site by about 20% so far.
Let me know if you decide to start your own blog and I'll let my readers know!
All the best,
Céline

I already looked at your blog, as a matter of fact (before posting this)!
I really like the clean look of the page and the topics I read were fantastic.
Do you have a formalized idea for how you decide what goes on the blog? What I mean is this: I am planning to have client-oriented translation content on the site in the near future (interviews with translation buyers in the industries I work in, maybe even an interview with the director of a film I subtitled, short ar... Do you have a formalized idea for how you decide what goes on the blog? What I mean is this: I am planning to have client-oriented translation content on the site in the near future (interviews with translation buyers in the industries I work in, maybe even an interview with the director of a film I subtitled, short articles on niche translation topics, etc.), so if I do develop a blog I would want it to be 1) less formal but 2) professional and absolutely presentable to prospective clients. Just interested if you have formulated a sort of approach for your own blog material.
I had thought of starting the blog separately, but using it as a section of the site itself makes sense for all the reasons you mentioned.
Very interesting reading!
