I have recently been asked to submit a proposal for a large multi-language project and one of the contract terms is that I have to provide evidence of insurance for bodily harm and property damage, indemnifying the client. The amount of required insurance coverage is in the millions. I have never had to provide any sort of evidence of indemnification of a client for translation services.

Can anyone share any experiences in having to provide evidence of insurance coverage and where one might go for something like this?

Thanks very much!

Sounds Like Boiler-Plate Aug 24, 2005

I suppose it would be a good idea to contact the client and discuss this, since you would be working off-site on an activity that is not hazardous with no possibility of any liability for the client, I would think.

It may just be part of their boiler-plate for all contracts, if you explain the situation they may eliminate that requirement, for there seems to be no rationale for it at all.

Dying from a translation error Aug 24, 2005

When I started, I was worried about this. What happens if there are errors in the safety precautions in a technical manual, and this causes the death of one of the client's customers? Will the translator be held responsible? Do you need insurance about this. I consider adding this to my T&Cs.

My professional association, the ITI, offers an attractive insurance scheme. The ATA may offer something similar, or should at least be able to direct you to providers of cover.

I would not go without insurance anyway Aug 24, 2005

Hi Harold,

I agree with Henry that, being off site, it seems ludicrous to have insurance for bodily harm and property damage.

However, I would not go without professional indemnity insurance. It is not compulsory, but some clients ask for it and it gives me peace of mind.

I have had professional indemnity insurance since I started working freelance, 10 years ago. At the moment, I am with the ITI, who offer covers for different amounts, not millions, but several hundreds of thousands of sterling pounds. My premium is less than £100 a year. Although based in the UK, their insurance is valid if you work from France, so maybe if you work from the US too.

The SFT (société française des traducteurs) also offers insurance.

Good luck,
Laure

PI Insurance is good to have Aug 24, 2005

It is good to get PI insurance in our line of work; saying that, I work as an insurance underwriter, so I have seen it all. It's a small premium to pay each year and it gives a professional image and peace of mind for those unthinkable, just in case moments. If anything goes to court, you'll need representation and that's when its a good idea to have an insurance company on your side.

PI insurance is available from practically all noteworthy insurers. In the UK I have had quotes from Norwich Union and Zurich Insurance Company. Approaching an independent insurance broker is probably the easiest way to get a number of quotes with one phone call.
