I plan to soon launch a website and was wondering if anyone could give me the URL for freelancer websites (including their own--no time to be shy) that they have found to be particularly impressive or distinctive in their design. I already know the text and the features that I will include, but don't have a real handle on design. Most importantly, I'd like to avoid the "generic website look" that seems so prevalent while at the same time avoiding gaudy bells and whistles.

I already know the text and the features that I will include, but don't have a real handle on design. Most importantly, I'd like to avoid the "generic website look" that seems so prevalent while at the same time avoiding gaudy bells and whistles.

And please, no reminders that all I need to do is a web search to locate websites. This I know. But I really would prefer to spare myself the time and bother of looking at 100 sites to identify the four or five of distinction that could be of some use to me in designing my own.

Not looking to "rip off" here. Just looking for models and ideas.

Thank you!

WEB DESIGNER Dec 17, 2006

Robert:

In Spanish we have a saying "zapatero a tus zapatos". What I mean is that, just as it takes a professional translator to translate well, a professional web designer may be of great help to you at this stage.
At least that was our experience when we decided to launch ours.
Once it is online, regular updates and modifications to make it more attractive are a must. In that respect, I feel we l have a looooong way to go.
Good luck and best wishes,

MY WEBSITE Dec 17, 2006

Robert,

I am not a designer at all, but I manage my own website and update the design regularly.

This is the URL:
http://www.traducciones-mexico.com

This time, as you say, I have a sui generis design, different from what we're used to seeing on the the web.
Hope it helps you, and if you need a hand, just email me.

Tadzio.

to get some inspiration. Other than that, design should be left to professionals. They attend universities for a reason.

This advice will save you a lot of time and money, in case somebody recognizes his/her design and sues you for plagiarism.

Hi Robert, Dec 17, 2006

I used be a web designer in the past and have designed many complicated web sites with Flash and Java animations, interactive forms, nice design, etc., but when it came to designing my own site, I avoided all these tricks and made a really “ascetic” site.

Here is my approach. If you are a professional translator, your website has to be a professional translator’s site, and all the “values” it contains should be targeted to such people who look for your professional service

I used be a web designer in the past and have designed many complicated web sites with Flash and Java animations, interactive forms, nice design, etc., but when it came to designing my own site, I avoided all these tricks and made a really “ascetic” site.

Here is my approach. If you are a professional translator, your website has to be a professional translator’s site, and all the “values” it contains should be targeted to such people who look for your professional services. Unique and nice design, interesting Flash or Java tricks and animations may impress web designers who visit your site, but never outsourcers, who look for your services as a translator. The fewer pictures you have on your site, the faster it will open. The fewer scripts you have for animations and interactive tricks, the fewer problems and error messages the visitors will get. Moreover, the simpler it is, the easier it will be for search engines to index it on their pages. So I think the ideal site for a professional translator is something that looks like a printout of a CV, because most translation agencies are used to reading CVs on a paper. Why annoy them, suggesting something that is different from what they’re used to read. The only privilege of the Internet in this respect is that you can provide links to the copies of your diplomas, sample translations and other useful links you think may help your visitors.

If you are ready to invest in this, I think you’d better buy some space for your site on a really fast and reliable server, and get a short, easy-to-remember domain name for your site. These are much more important factors.

Also note that security levels keep rising. Each new version of browsers suggests a higher level of security, because nowadays viruses are incorporated even in images, so browsers are trying to block any suspicious object. The Java objects I used five years ago do not open now. The safest code is the plain HTML code, which will never be blocked by browsers. Maybe a translation agency has some reason for using a professionally designed website, because it shows that the agency has not saved their funds to hire a professional web designer. But a freelancer does not have to show an agency that they are professional in terms of spending money for designing a website.

Here is my site: www.pipoyan.com/trans/ .

I hope this helps.

Henry

Professional help Dec 17, 2006

I recommend getting professional help - a client designed and built my website for me as a favour (it's also hosted by another client). I have actually been phoned by a web design agency who were planning on marketing websites for translators(!) who asked if they could use mine as a good example... www.aretranslation.com. I like it, but can claim no credit for it whatsoever!

My website is not a conventional one, I think it's one of the most colorfoul translator's website I've seen But the reason for this design is that I am a young translator and wanted a "fresh" website, my main areas of specialization are videogames and localization and most of my clients are "young" too; with this design I have attracted clients who work on the fields of design, videogames, websites, ERP... My favourite ones

I think what is important is what is "on" the website Dec 17, 2006

I have gone as an editor in my free time (not so much lately but it may come again) through 100's of agencies and translators websites over the last months and I must admit the site I remember most is not because of the design but because it stood out of the crowd because of it creativity.

This page was a page from a small team of translators from Switzerland trying to educate the clients using humor. What they wrote was so fun to make your day but was dramatically true.

If you have a great content, the design may be simple. You don't have to spend a fortune on a flash page to say three words. Such pages may be impressive but in the long term are less remembered.

Joao, that's awesome!!! I can't imagine how long it took you to compile that list.

Henrik, thanks for your input. I had been wondering about website "loadability".

Robert, thanks for starting this thread.

One more URL for you, Robert Jan 23, 2007

Hello Robert,

You are certainly welcome to take a look at my site. I am also based in the States, and used tools provided by Yahoo. I have used a clock to indicate my time zone more effectively, and avoid calls at 5 am local time, and a bit of music.
Good luck! Web site design is fun, creative and enjoyable.

Thanks so much. I like the clean, straightforward design--and the music is a nice touch (though it seems to evoke Spain more than France).

Very best regards,
