Where does an average American with a few hundred thousand dollars keep the money?



Not in a bank I presume, since there are many attractive alternatives. Do mutual funds really yield 15% a year, and are they as safe as \"money in the bank\"?

Depending upon the type, mutual funds are generally based all or in part on investments in various stock markets, and are subject to fluctuations in the financial markets, although the risk is spread out among among a variety of stocks, bonds, and other investment instruments. I doubt if there are many funds -- if any--yielding 15% in this market.



There appears to be a trend toward investing in real estate if some commentators are to be believed.

Mutual funds are NOT as safe as banks, at least not in the USA. A bank deposit is insured by the government up to $100K while mutual funds are not.



My funds went from 20+% per year in the 90s to -20--% since 2000.



So, if you want save, put it in a bank at 2%. If you want risk, put it in individual stocks or go to Vegas.

If you want in between, YOU tell ME!
