Do any Translators’ Associations hold their members to a certain ethical code or type of agreement that would mean everyone was playing on a level field?

I’m mainly thinking about how translators interact with other members of their own profession, but it could also include how they deal with clients and agencies.

I'm interested in finding out if something like this exists.

Can't say I've ever heard of there being a universal code of conduct, but would imagine that all professional associations expect their members to adhere to similar ethical and professional standards.

Here is the ITI code of conduct:

ITI has both individual and corporate members, and has separate codes of conduct for each category.

They're all quite similar Jul 18, 2007

If you look at the codes of conduct of various translation associations, you'll find they're all more or less the same.

Here's the SATI code:

(scroll down)

However, your question seems to be how can translators be protected from each other... am I right? Interesting question -- most codes seem to focus more on how translators should not screw clients than on how translators should not screw each other.

While we're at it, does anyone have references to a code of conduct about how clients should not screw translators?

This was developed among the moderators about five years ago, and then refined a bit based on member feedback. Like the others, this is mostly about interaction of translators with clients, or vice versa, but a few of the points are related to, or might be applied to, translator-to-translator interaction.

Asetrad Jul 19, 2007

John,

You've also got Asetrad here in Spain (as well as several regional associations).

Here's the link to Asetrad's Code of Conduct:
