Dear linguists,

Is there anyone who exactly knows what is meant with "Naschkätzchen"? I cannot provide any context but I just want to learn what this word refers to. I guess a person who likes eating sugar is called "Naschkätzchen" or am I wrong?

Hello Alison (also @Burcu) Unfortunately, I cannot comment on any answers, since the asker did not remove the checkmark for proz.com membership. I'd only like to add that I disagree with the "nibbler" suggestion like Edith does. "to nibble" is "knabbern" in German. While I agree with the part about the "diminutive," I can't see Naschkatze or Naschkätzchen being used for anyone not eating sweets. You call this one a "Knabberfreund." So you're right to retain "sugar" as part of the compound noun.

little nibbler

As a diminutive, it's typically used to refer to cute little kids, not grown men raiding the fridge at midnight. Sweet tooth doesn't really get that across as it lacks the flexibility of the German which can slap the diminutive on almost anything..
