Hello,

Could anybody recommend a good tax advisor / accountant in the UK?

Or alternatively would you have any tips where to look for one with experience in the cross-boarder translation business.

Many thanks in advance,
Ute

You have just missed by 3 days a very interesting and useful talk by an expert from Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) about UK taxation -- specially aimed at translators and interpreters. It was given as part of the ITI's Professional Development Course.

One key point is that HMRC are trying to reduce dependence on accountants. No longer do you need to provide a balance sheet. All you need now is a cash book, properly maintained, and that will provide what you need to fill in your own tax return.

He also gave a great deal of information about claimable expenses. This is far more generous than you might think, and basically covers anything that enables you to run your business better. You can for example claim generous expenses were using a bicycle on business, or when travelling to your source for target country. You can claim a proportion of UK Council Tax.

Cross-border translation business makes no difference. HMRC provide on their website a list of approved exchange rates. So you just convert any foreign currency earnings using those exchange rates into GBP and add them to your profits.

I use a Software package called TaxCalc which enables you to fill in your tax return and submit it online. It also contains very extensive help on all the boxes that have to be filled in. It can be upgraded each year.

Having said that, it may make sense to use an accountant for your first year. Then use that as a template for subsequent years. It is then unlikely that your accountant will save more than he or she costs.

need advice on VAT Feb 9, 2007

Dear Peter,

thank you for your advice, already I was not aware of some of the points you have mentioned.

Would you have any contact details of the the person giving this talk? I would love to try and possibly secure a written summary or at least find out when there will be another talk.

While I have so far 'done it myself' I would really value the advise on a number of issues including VAT, becoming incorporated, etc.... by an experienced tax advisor / accountant.

Thus any personal recommendations or tips where to start looking for such an expert from the proz community would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,
Ute

Dear Peter,

I would also appreciate if you could tell me if there is a way of contacting the person who made that talk in order to get a summary or some sort of advice.

Thank you very much!

Eva
