A 'fake' price? I don't think anyone is kidding themselves that Trados is sold at just above unit cost. Why should it be? The company sells the product at the price at which people will buy it.
If it chooses to have limited reductions (and Victor's link produces no reductions for me, so I imagine it is limited to certain places or types of customer), then that's its own choice.
I don't really see what the problem is.

I just revisited the link, and it tells me that the promotion has now ended. It still worked a few hours ago.

I do not even respond to "TRADOS required" posts, because I know that they come invariably from agencies intent on recouping the advantages of the application for their own profit despite the translator's own well-overpriced investment.
The price will stay as ridiculous as it is as long as translators in large enough numbers feel they are obliged to shell out 'for fear' of losing some competitive edge.

I know it has been discussed previously (can't find the thread, though) that Trados can be bought at a completely different price in some "low-income countries".
In fact, I once had the opportunity to buy it for just about 300 € (only about a year ago, so it's been a quite recent version). At that time, the group buying here at Proz.com (including a 12-month membership) was somewhere around 550 €.

There is a new scam doing the rounds. People selling pirated software have changed tacks -- they are no longer targeting only people who want to buy illegal software; they now also target people who would only buy legal software.

Do you honestly believe someone could develope some complicated application suite like Trados and stay in business year after year and charge only a few hundred bucks for a license?
After all SDL Trados is situated in high-price countries, not in India (as far as I know) and will pay its team normal salaries.
I support also Wordfast, which is of course a much smaller enterprise and a much simpler software. And I'm all for discounts targeted at low-income countries. Updating S... Moreover, there is no reason for an agency to demand its use: even if the agency works with Trados, it may easily prepare the files in such a way that it can be done with any tool.
Now imagine this situation: a large agency gets hefty discounts for a software package for itself, plus a pack of discounts for its most trusted translators. It is only natural that the agency seeks no alternatives, moreover it demands that all other freelancers it works with use the software. And there are a lot of them. And the price they pay for the software is high... Isn't that a nice way to build your market position?
Of course, I am not saying that any given translation software company is doing anything like that... But the thought that it might is uncomfortable enough.
The solution is as simple, as it is unrealistic: educate the agencies that there are more alternatives, that the tool might not be that imporant in the end. In fact, I know several translators who are pretending to have Trados, while working with other tools... the agencies hardly notice that.
I had hoped much for XLIFF, as it seemed to be the perfect solution for the problem, as it would free translators from vendor-specific solutions (ideally, any file format would be converted by the agency to XLIFF; then the translator would be able to work on the XLIFF file with any tool he or she feels comfortable with). Sadly, it is taking much longer than expected... ▲ Collapse

Oh, OK, then even here the advantage is dubious...
I am not saying that Trados is really worse than other options. But it is definitely not much better, as the price (I mean the price for the mere mortals) might suggest.
It may be that I might still choose Trados on the basis of the features it provides. But it should be my choice, not the agencies'.
